About 16 hours ago deviantart.com and SquareEnix started a contest. What can you win? How can you enter?

Well you will definately win 1000 US$, the FFXIII triology on XBOX 360 with a custom XBOX 360 and a custom XBOX 360 Controller, a Lightning Returns: FFXIII shirt and key chain, and to top it all off an original sketch by Tetsuya Nomura, all in one package!

You can enter by making a 2000(width)x500(height) drawing of Lightning in your own original costume and submiting it to deviantart.com. You have to be at least 13 years of age though to participate, kinda ironic huh?... The 3 best drawings will be chosen by Tetsuya Nomura. Also, all countries can take part in this contest, so it's not US only.

Simple isn't it? The grand prize up there ^ is available three times, which means three people can win it. You've got time until February 20th at 11:59 PM (PST), which is about 8 days.

Together with Tecmo Koei, the creators of the Dynasty Warriors series, Nintendo is working on a new project called Hyrule Warriors for the Wii U. That title is not yet final though, so it might get a new one. It is also not yet known if there are any other playable characters besides Link, or if he'll be playable at all, since there isn't any other info, except for this trailer.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not the actual The Legend of Zelda that is supposed to come out for the Wii U in the future, but a spin-off.

Come one, come all! The GCN Gift Shop is open for business!

Would you like to have yourself a GCN branded t-shirt or accessory? Well, just in time for Christmas, you can do just that. These items are made to order thanks to our friends at the Spreadshirt team and are shipped out within one-two days of the order being placed. Here is an example of a recommended item:

1,width=280,height=280.png 2,width=280,height=280.png

As you can see, this particular shirt sports the official GCN logo on the front, while the back is customisable. When the order is made, you have the option to change the text on the back. USERNAME can be the name you use here, while the 00 is best made your user ID number (which can be found by looking at your profile link). A variety of t-shirt colours are at your disposal, so if black isn't your favourite, you can change the colour, though be certain that the colour scheme matches to the design.

Also available are items such as pinnable buttons, mugs, glasses, and hoodies, though we likely will be expanding to other products. The best news is that a commission from each sale is put into maintaining the community, so by making a purchase, you are giving back to the community.

To see our full range of items, click on the Gift Shop link at the top of the site, or visit http://the-gcn.spreadshirt.com, and get yourself an officially branded product.

I know how much you people love Pokémon so I've got nice news for ya'll. Pokémon X and Y each come in a bundle with a 2DS. Sadly though, it's just pre-installed, so you won't have a physical copy of the game and the 2DS's will NOT have a special design, so, sorry all you collectors out there.

They're available from today on and will cost about $149.99 in the states. The Y version will only be available in Toys R Us it seems.

Both Versions will also be available in Europe today for 149.00€, except for Germany. There it seems, only the X version will be available, but therefore there will be a bundle with Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Both of them will also cost 149.00€.

Note: Please correct me if there is any false info.

You may or may not have noticed, but there have been a few slight cosmetic tweaks performed here at The GCN.

I've modified the user group icons, because the previous ones looked like crap, lol. I've also made some slight edits to the Terms of Service. Some of them were worded a little bit iffy, so I updated them, as well as using a different font. If anyone can correctly identify it, I'll give you a cookie. =P I recommend you take a look at them, just in case you need a refresher.

On top of that, I have added a new profile field, for Nintendo Network ID. Basically, if you have a Wii U, you will have a NNID, so there's a field for that, should you want to share it.

I have also changed two of the user group names:

δελτοιδ has been changed to Deltazoid. I was originally planning on calling the group Betazoid, but considering it's the name of a Star Trek race, I figured I shouldn't. =P

Banned has been changed to Exiled. In addition, anyone who has been exiled will find themselves unable to return to the community, and instead, will find themselves experiencing something different.

So for now, that's it. I'm also working on trying to get some community gaming organised, though with the timezone differences, it may be a bit tricky.

Something I'm sure some of you may have noticed by now, a few additions have been made to the community. From aesthetic to accessibility, these are just a few of the additions:

  • Random video game quotes: The top of the site will load a random quote from a video game, each and every time the page changes, or is refreshed.
  • New Facebook page: Yes, a new Facebook page has been added. Providing I have things set right, it should pull news directly from the community whenever it's posted.
  • Facebook/Twitter Connect: The ability to create an account, or log in to your existing account by using Facebook and/or Twitter. Any status updates you make on The GCN can be set on FB/Twitter, and vice-versa.
  • Facebook Like: Wanna like the official Facebook page? Feel free to do so. You can also directly visit the page whenever you like.
  • Removal of IP.Board/IP.Board Mobile skins: The default skins are kinda meh, so I hid them.

Other additions may very likely be made in the near future.

It is a sad day for Nintendo. Hiroshi Yamauchi, who revolutionised the gaming industry, has passed away after suffering complications with pneumonia. He was 85 years of age.

While a lot of what he did could be considered controversial, he did set the tone for the video gaming industry, and let us not forget that it was he who made the decision to hire our beloved Shigeru Miyamoto, in spite of the latter's inexperience with video games in general.

A lot of information can be found floating all around the interwebs, so I'll refrain from posting repeat information, but I do ask... how do you feel at this news? Is there anything you may wish to comment on the topic?

We're Back!

First of all, I would like to apologise for the inconvenience of the past couple of days. The host had performed maintenance on the servers, which made a slight shift in the file structure. As a result, it caused a multitude of issues. It was so bad that I was forced to reinstall the site, and restore from a backup. In doing so, there may still be bugs around the site. In this case, I ask that you post in the Bug Tracker. I am still working on fixing up the few bugs that may still be lurking around, so please be patient.

That said, you will also notice a new look with the community. Yes, I decided it was time for a change. Working together with Branden, the site's logo has been modified, and I am currently working on some new imagery of my own that will be fitted to the site in the near future. I have also added a new skin (The Twilight Network), but don't fret. If you don't like the look of this skin (which I am working on anyway), you can use The Dark Network, or The Deviant Network (formerly known as Deviant 3).

You will also notice that some features have been removed, as they weren't used as often anymore. Primarily, the Battle system and the Arcade are no more. However, I am going to be checking around for any cool features that may be good to add to the community.

In some fantastic gaming news, Microsoft has canceled their plans for DRM on the XBox One.

From http://www.giantbomb...e-dr/1100-4673/

What does this mean?

  • No more always online requirement
  • The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
  • All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
  • An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
  • All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
  • No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
  • Region locks have been dropped

This is why it's important to let your voice be heard as a consumer. Microsoft was forced to reconsider their plans after public outcry against DRM, and abysmal preorder figures. Remember, companies are out to make a profit and to do that they need you. The strongest message you can send is "I will not buy your product". Either they listen or go out of business.
