I think what is now "last-gen" might be my last console generation. Durango? Basically a PC with Kinect and connectivity forced onto you. PS4? Basically a PC and by Sony, and you might know my attitude towards Sony Computer Entertainment and their attitude by this point. Wii U? Well... I'm still hoping for it to blossom, but this is probably the least sure I've been about Nintendo in a long time. Granted, the 3DS is still there and that one's been going well, has games I want, etc., so I'll still be gaming on handhelds.

I am wondering how they force kinect use, how will that work out? Does that mean you must use it with every game or something? Confused on that.

 

At this point, graphics aren't going to get "better" per se anyway. At this point, it's just uncanny valley, where it's JUST real enough to look cool, but humans are never going to look right with 3d stuff, there's always something off. We are our own judge on that, we see humans every day so we know each and every little movement.

 

If this sells a lot, I'll lose faith in the gaming culture, seriously. Used games block is terrible, that's all I ever buy.

If Microsoft can't advance their machine a little better, I believe it could be in serious trouble. My Xbox red-ringed last year (which seems strange that a console could just die like that... My Snes still works fine, and I've had it since I was five.) so I bought a brand new one along with a Wii U as a special Christmas gift to ME! It took me forever to even get the damn thing set up, thanks to the metric shit ton of required information and KINECT which I cant/wont ever use because my room is shaped weird and I don't wanna move my heavy-ass couch just because I wanna play Kinectamels. It wouldn't even let me use the giant 255GB addon memory block I used to have on my old Xbox because the KINECT Xbox is not shaped right, so I lost ALL my game information!

 

The Wii U was an absolute sinch to set up, and I got to keep all my game information from my old Wii!

Thankfully my 360 hasn't ever redringed on me, but I do have the elite version. I'm not sure if those have that problem. I have two old xboxes, one I got for 4 bucks at goodwill a few weeks ago, it has a problem of a flashing green light so nothing will play on it, but I mainly got it to scrap for parts. I wanted to see if I could get it to run again and sell it, but it'll take a while to get to it.

It's quite a shame, especially since today's technology gives us the chance to make gigantic and incredible looking games and that combined with awesome gameplay (well at least those games whose creators are masterminds like Kojima and Miyamoto). I really wish all those big companies weren't made of money hungry living assfucks (wow, this is the very first time that I didn't censor a word). They make so much money which they don't really need, money they could use to help the needy. And worse of all is that they look for excuses like that "blocking used video games" bullshit and "connectivity" to gain even more money. Or that crap idea with the special mini SD cards for the PSV that don't allow you to put illegally downloaded games (which is actually good but they cost about 50 bucks and that's way too much. Also alot of games that are illegally downloaded, are made/released by big (money hungry and overated) companies like Electronics Arts or Activision).

Just like the PS4, a watered down PC... $20 someone gets PS4 or Durango games running on generic PCs within a year of launch.

 

Kinda sad this is the future of console gaming, but at least the PC is here to stay. Aiming for the lowest common denominator will ensure gimmicks dont ruin the platform.

Consoles were never, ever supposed to be gaming computers, so your expectations are way too high.

 

(And no, they will not get the games running without serious reverse engineering. even if the hardware is more similar to PCs this time around, it's still unique from average PCs in certain ways, and the games are built to run on it, and only it. so you have no more chance of seeing a game like inFamous: Second Son for the PS4 running on a PC than you did seeing inFamous 1 & 2 for the PS3 running on a PC)

 

Also, I don't know if you missed it, but:

This ISN'T the future of consoles, it's the future of Xbox consoles. The PS4 and the Wii U do not require internet to play, and they do not block used games.

 

Microsoft shot themselves in the foot with the Durango, and ensured they will not have another generation of consoles after this one.

 

Sony and Nintendo, on the other hand? I expect the PS5 and WiiWii(or whatever they name it) to launch when this new generation reaches its end, because they know how to satisfy gamers.

 

And yes, I'm positive there will be another generation; console gaming isn't dying for a looooong time, guys, and I know that for a fact. Xbox gaming, however... :3

To clarify, I didn't mean I expect a PC experience from a console, just that if they're running near off-the-shelf hardware and x86 cpus then what's the point? My mention of the PC was merely that since most people dont have gimmick hardware and the platform is much more open, its not likely that the majority of games would require something pointless (for most games) like the kinect or wiimote. 

 

For the most part, its wait and see. Just too many unknowns at this point for pretty much every player in the game. These leaks suggest terrible ideas in the MIcrosoft camp, Sony doesn't have the greatest track record in my book and Nintendo still appears to lack that vital 3rd party support (and once again very well might continue to lack it due to being underpowered next to its soon-to-be competition. Not saying in and of itself that "lesser" hardware is bad).

In regards to needing internet connection, I always wondered how people do system updates to their systems if they don't have internet. Like the Wii for example. You needed a system update for a few games (Skyward Sword and Brawl come to mind). How do people do that without internet?

 

I only buy used games. The only new games I buy is for Zelda series and Pokemon. Mainly so I can get the Club Nintendo points. I still think this would be a death toll for the system if they get rid of that.

 

As for downloading the games onto the HDD itself, it does seem stupid to require that, because eventually it's going to fill up. And if there are one-time use activation codes, then how do you re-download the game onto your system? Unless it's like the 360 and goes off your Live account.

 

The kinect thing is just creepy.

 

Parents will end up setting up a gaming system with an always powered on camera in their children’s bedroom, and this alone is a WTF to the nth degree.

If I ever have children, than I hope that they don't become wannabe gamers (if they ever become gamers, I'm not going to make them of course) like those of today, like my little cousin who think that graphics are all that matters and that always have to have all those overrated and poorly made video games just because everyone else plays them. I want them to become gamers that appreciate the game as it is. I want them to be able to make their own opinion and to understand what matters in a game.

There's update partitions on the game disks themselves. I don't think all games contain them, but certain games - ex. Mario Kart Wii and Galaxy 2, I believe? - do and ask the user to perform the update when they're trying to start the game.

I have a friend who couldn't connect his systems to the internet for years, so his Wii was not up to date. I was there with him the day he got Brawl, never had to update to do a thing, and we played the hell out of the game. So I don't really think that's true. Anyways, I don't know about other systems, but you can update the PS3 and PSP with updates you downloaded to removable media elsewhere that does have internet.

You don't get them. If you lose the game, or if it breaks, it's gone. Unless they actually do allow you to redownload with your account(which I doubt they will, they love money too much), but it's just some dumb anti-used games tech that is designed to piss people off.

They extort you for services that are free, -literally- almost everywhere else. YouTube needs Gold? Internet browser needs Gold? Playing online needs Gold? The Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Instant I already pay for, that doesn't use Microsoft's servers in any(same with YouTube, facebook, others too) way needs Gold? Doesn't Facebook require Gold, too? Yeah, that's just down-right dirty.

The PS4 has way more than a share button, just so you know. Also, I have a capture device, too, and streaming a game to the internet directly from my console beats the living hell out of doing so with my capture device and some buggy as all hell streaming client on my PC.

That's a pretty good idea. My very first time playing on a console was with the N64 and then the PS2 came. But I never got the chance to play a SEGA system like the Saturn or the Genesis. But luckily if it weren't for my big brothers I probably would have become a "new generation" gamer like a lot of kids today.

 

I won't deny them any sort of gaming consoles, but I would like them to appreciate what they have. My parents had me work for money to pay for my games and stuff. It helps when you pay for your own stuff, you appreciate it much more.

 

That's exactly how I grew up (and still am). I have to pay for my games from my own pocket, that's also why it takes me like 2 months to be able to buy a (new) game and why I try to take care of my games and consoles as much as I can. I get all depressed if my disks get scratches, even when they're just slight scratches, or if the cover papers rip a just teensy-weensy bit xD.

Just as an aside, you really ought to. If these rumors are to be believed (and from the looks of the article, this seems to stem from a fairly reliable source), then Microsoft is about to be guilty of one of the hugest invasions of privacy the world has ever seen before, with the potential to instantly see whatever happens to be in front of every Kinect device that's hooked up to a console with an internet connection. I don't know about you, but I absolutely don't want a camera in my house--never mind my own room--that has the potential to spy on me at any time without me being aware of it.
